On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake of magnitude 9 on the Richter scale hit the Tohoku area of Japan. And a tsunami of over 10 metres crashed into the towns along the sea.
Japan is prone to earthquakes, and Tohoku particularly so. Therefore, the people of Tohoku were trained to escape inland from any tsunami. However, the earthquake and tsunami on March 11 were the greatest ever. 18800 or more people died, 92% of them killed by the tsunami.
I went to the stricken area one month after the earthquake. I'd seen many photographs of Tohoku in the newspapers or on television. However, the reality was more miserable than what I'd seen. Very many houses and buildings along the sea were lost.
I photographed the stricken area. It was heartbreaking work. However, I wanted many people to know about Tohoku. I wanted the people in the world to know the fear of an earthquake or tsunami, and not to forget Tohoku.
